Bringing the truck escort industry together.

Clarification on truck escort brokerage companies and PiloTrac.

As far as truck escort brokerage companies go and the trucking industry as a whole our thoughts on brokerage are this: there’s are a lot of pilot car runs being brokered. The percentage of them is extremely high. With today’s technology there is no need to have such a high percentage of the loads being booked solely by a few truck escort brokerage companies (in a comparison ratio). Just like within the trucking industry itself we realize that freight brokers are a necessity. It is something the truck escort industry absolutely has to have. The reason for this is because no matter how good your marketing team is or how big it is you cannot have a customer in every location. So that’s when you rely on the broker to get you out of there maximizing your bottom line. Not to run you for every single mile you’re running. That’s called just getting by not making money. We’ve read comments on social media saying that we are against brokers. We have been in the industry too long to even entertain these kind of thoughts. Maybe 25 years ago we didn’t like it so much but we were young and didn’t understand how the industry as a whole operates. If someone has a bad thing to say about PiloTrac ask yourself why? you’ve got a well established company that works with all of the trucks at some point or another and you can bet they all subscribe to our emails that offers you the opportunity to deal directly with the customer for $4 a month. Something is wrong. Anyway, so again yes pilot car brokerage companies are a necessity. However we do believe that just a handful of companies are doling out the majority of the runs within our industry. That is soon to change. As technology evolves there is no way for this to stay the same as with any industry. So, with good expectations and growing together into the future we do expect the percentage of brokered runs within the pilot car industry to decrease. That’s just the way it is, we don’t make the rules. Whether or not it’s our system or someone else’s is going to happen. The truck escort industry is way behind in technology as we all know and in comparison is pretty much like a rotary phone. Also to address one more item. Are brokers allowed to post loads on the PiloTrac website? The answer is yes. As long as the system is not flooded with brokered runs we welcome these companies to post their available runs. However, we are marketing the system so hard that within a reasonable amount of time every carrier in North America will be well aware of and using the PiloTrac system for truck escorts needs. Once again it’s just evolution. PiloTrac is a live system that that completely maximizes productivity for both truck escort companies and trucking companies. So while the carrier usually calls company “A” when they’re in a particular state or province they will undoubtedly reach towards the live system via tablet, phone or computer knowing that they’re maximizing their productivity by choosing a truck escort company that can appropriately handle the run requirements that is the closest to the start location of the job. It’s just common sense.

Truck escorts and the trucks they work with.

Truck escorts are needed every single day and we make it happen with efficiency.

Where’s the phone app?

To address the delay in the release of the phone application that allows truck escort drivers, managers and operators to post their live locations from portable devices here’s what’s going on. With this new system that we built being so complicated – and it is. The new development team started looking around at all the different fields in the database and could not figure out how to connect everything as it is a complete entanglement of commands with rules and structures for everything. Like “you can do this and you can do that, as long as this is done and that’s done too, if the account is in this status”. If that gives you and idea of what they’re trying to deal with all combined with the existing codes that make the system run properly. The new development team asked us if we had schematics for the system which we don’t. Nobody does. It’s all custom coding that was done from scratch. So what we’re in the process of doing is connecting two software development companies together with each other. Which is a very hard to do. It’s like trying to get two football teams to all work together for one objective instead of two. We are however working it out and it is going to happen. It’s just going to take us a little more time. So please bare with us. In the meantime see if you can have a friend or relative do your live posts for you in the event you are on the road and do not have access to a computer. We are truly working as quickly as possible to try to get this resolved and completed for more reasons than one. I have personally seen the design of the system and absolutely cannot wait to have it released because it looks so cool. It even makes interesting sounds when you do certain functions. However, if those functions do not operate flawlessly then there’s absolutely no reason to release it. Hopefully we will have some good news on that topic soon.

Where is all of the business this season?

As far as business goes if you are wondering where all of the work is at then you should know that you are not alone. Freight volumes are still low. For some reason this winter we broke record highs with higher freight volumes than what is normal for the winter months. As far as this summer is going it’s obviously starting late. We think this is due to the weather this year as the temperatures in the Northern states remained cold well into and past the spring. Frost laws can definitely dictate the amount of freight being shipped no matter where you are located in the nation. Our guess is that things will go into full swing within the next few weeks. So if you find yourself without a huge amount of work, now is a good time to go through all your safety equipment, make sure everything is up to date and and add more good content to your PiloTrac account. Just so you know we predict a strong spike this season which will mean at the peak of it there may not be enough trucks for a moment and definitely will not be enough truck escorts to cover all the runs that are available.

Why is this not? Where is the? What?

For those of you out there that may be having problems using the new system we realize that not everyone is a computer geek. In fact we struggle most of the time ourselves. So if you are finding the new PiloTrac system difficult to use or are having any kind of problems with your account simply let us know by sending us an e-mail (include phone number) or contacting us by phone. Please keep in mind that we are located in the Pacific time zone and that most of you are a few hours ahead of us. We are available Monday – Friday from 9 AM until 4 PM PST. If you are unable to reach someone by phone don’t be frustrated, simply leave a voice-mail and we will return your call as soon as possible as we are probably helping someone else or doing something related. Many times we are here after hours in the evenings and also on the weekends. Se are officially closed but if we see you calling we will take your call if we’re available.

Assumptions and presumptions.

To clarify for those of you who may have been in the industry a few years we’re not just and internet company. We genuinely love and care about this specialized sector of the transportation industry and especially the pilot car industry. Evidence of that can easily be be seen with a cursory glance at our pricing model being just a little over $4 a month. Dig deeper and you will find much more as all of our staff have been actively working in the trucking industry now for years. Personally, this author is coming up on 30 years whether it be driving a truck, working in an office, rallying against cheap freight or running a industry website. Pretty much each thing that we do here involves putting the health of the trucking industry first before our own self and thinking every single decision and choice we make thoroughly through before saying, doing, designing or implementing it. Basically living and breathing the trucking industry (like many of you do). So were far from being newbs, geeks or a greed driven company. I mention this because with social media we all tend to get carried away at times by things that are directly related to what we do. We all have an opinion. What counts the most is the way we choose to react and the words we use. Replace condemnation with compassion. Think about the words you are going to use first. Consider everyone not just yourself. There is a reason why there are two letter s’s in the word embarrassed and hopefully nobody wants to see another fall.

We wish the best to everyone and their families this joyous summer season. Be safe!
